How Is a Photo Put Inside a 3D Crystal?

Your photo is placed inside a 3D crystal by subsurface laser engraving. A 3D model is generated from your picture, and a focused laser then forms fine points inside the solid block that together build the image. Nothing is printed on the outside surface. The picture forms within the optical glass itself.
What "a photo inside glass" actually means
It means the image is part of the block, not a layer on it. Hold a 3D crystal up to a lamp and the picture appears to float in the middle of the material, because that is literally where it is. Run a finger over the outside and you feel smooth polished glass, with nothing to catch.
That is the whole difference from every other kind of photo product. A print sits on a surface. This is formed inside one.
Etched, engraved, or a picture inside glass?
Shoppers describe this in several ways, and they all mean the same process:
- "Etched photo block": etching usually implies working on a surface, but people use it for this too.
- "Laser photo engraving" or "laser engraved crystal": accurate, and the most common term.
- "Picture inside glass" or "photo inside a glass block": a plain description of the result, and often the clearest.
- "3D photo crystal": describes the dimensional effect.
The technical name is subsurface engraving: engraving beneath the surface of a transparent material rather than on it. If you have seen any of these terms and wondered whether they are different products, they generally are not.
From your picture to a finished block
There are three stages.
1. A 3D model is generated from your picture. Your uploaded photo, an everyday JPEG or PNG, is converted into a three-dimensional model. This is the step that turns a flat image into something with depth information, and it is why a well-lit photo with clear tonal separation engraves better than a flat or heavily filtered one.
2. The laser forms points inside the crystal. A laser is focused to a precise position inside the block and forms a fine point there. Repeated many thousands of times at different positions and depths, those points build up the picture you see suspended in the material. Because the beam is focused to a point inside the glass, the engraving forms there rather than on the polished outer surface.
3. The block is finished and checked. Each piece is manufactured and laser-engraved to order, and every crystal is inspected before it ships.
The production details
The current production equipment uses a 532 nm, 3 W laser and is rated for up to 6,000 engraving points per second, 0.01 mm engraving accuracy, and points under 0.1 mm in size. It is computer-controlled and accepts standard image formats.
Those figures describe the point size, the placement accuracy and the operating rate of the equipment.
Why the engraving is clear-and-white
There is no ink anywhere in this process. The points formed inside the glass scatter light, and scattered light reads as white against the clear material around it. That is the entire reason a 3D crystal engraving is clear-and-white rather than full colour. It is not a limitation of the design, but a consequence of engraving rather than printing.

When the engraving is 2D instead of 3D
Each block size carries a recommended figure range. If a photo holds more figures than the chosen block can carry at full depth, it is engraved in 2D rather than 3D, which keeps the faces more readable at that size.
The result is still a clear image inside the crystal. It simply does not carry the dimensional depth that makes the 3D effect distinctive. What this is not
- Not a surface print. No ink, no film, no coating on the outside of the block.
- Not a photograph placed inside. Nothing is inserted; the block is solid and the image is formed within it.
- Not a sandwich or a laminate. There are no layers glued together.
- Not colour. Engraving forms points, and points read white.
Because the engraving sits below the surface rather than on top, the polished outside of the block carries no image layer at all.
