2D vs 3D Crystal Engraving: What Changes?

A 3D crystal engraving gives the subject visible depth inside the block, while a 2D engraving arranges the image on a flatter internal plane. At Giftenova, 2D preparation is used for photos that exceed the selected variant’s figure capacity, inherently flat artwork, and complex subjects when a 3D model cannot be generated. The current product listing and its size images show the latest capacity for each option.

What Is a 3D Crystal Engraving?

For a 3D engraving, the submitted picture is prepared and a 3D model is generated from it. A laser then forms fine points inside the crystal to build the image. Those points create the contours and depth that make a face or figure appear three-dimensional when the block is viewed from different angles.

The image is not printed onto the surface. It sits inside the lead-free K9 optical crystal, so the polished outside carries no picture layer. The full production sequence is explained in how a photo is put inside a 3D crystal.

What Is a 2D Crystal Engraving?

A 2D crystal engraving still places the picture inside the block, but the image reads on a flatter plane instead of being modeled with the same depth. The depth treatment does not guarantee that unclear details become readable.

Two-dimensional does not mean that the source is printed on the surface or that the engraving uses color. The image is still rendered as clear-and-white points inside the crystal.

Both treatments place engraved points inside the crystal. The difference is how depth is represented. Conceptual illustration, not to scale.

When Does Giftenova Use 2D Instead of 3D?

The source artwork and the selected crystal both matter:

  • More figures than the selected option supports: the photo is prepared in 2D instead of 3D.
  • Inherently flat artwork: text, handwriting and signatures are prepared as 2D engravings. Logos are usually prepared this way too.
  • Complex subjects: for cars, houses and other objects, whether a 3D model can be generated depends on the artwork’s size, shape and complexity. If a model cannot be generated, the image is prepared in 2D.

Capacities can change as product options change, so this guide does not freeze a number into the article. Choose a shape and size on the 3D crystal photo block product page, then use the current listing images to check how many people that exact option supports.

Does Low Resolution Cause a 2D Engraving?

No. Low resolution does not automatically mean a 2D engraving. Photo quality is reviewed separately from figure capacity and depth preparation. If a submitted image needs work, it may be enhanced, or Giftenova may ask for an alternative picture.

There is no fixed minimum resolution for every photo. Use the clearest source you have, with the subject and important details visible. See what photos work best for a 3D crystal for the selection checklist.

Should You Choose a Larger Crystal for a Group?

A larger option may provide more room, but capacity is not something to infer from the size name alone. Check the current product image for the exact variant. If the group exceeds its stated capacity, either choose a current option that supports the group, select a tighter photo with fewer people, or accept the 2D preparation.

The group photos in a 3D crystal guide covers face size, spacing, crops, and background choices for multi-person pictures.

2D vs 3D Crystal Engraving Questions

Is a 2D crystal engraving printed on the surface?

No. The image is still engraved as points inside the crystal. The difference is the depth treatment of the image, not its location.

Can I request 3D for any number of people?

The selected variant has a current people or figure capacity. If the photo exceeds it, the image is prepared in 2D. Check the product listing for the latest limit before choosing.

Will a blurry photo automatically become 2D?

No. Image quality and 2D fallback are separate decisions. Every uploaded photo is reviewed before production. If it needs work Giftenova may enhance it, or ask for an alternative picture.

Does 2D engraving reproduce the photo in color?

No. Both 2D and 3D crystal engravings read as clear-and-white points inside the glass. For a full-color result, compare the crystal with a printed photo-block format.
