Do Puzzles Need Glue to Frame?
Posted by GIFTENOVA
Not always. A suitable puzzle frame can hold the pieces securely without glue. Gluing joins the pieces for handling and display, but the finished puzzle still needs appropriate support and mounting. Follow the frame and adhesive instructions for your chosen method. Framing is one of several endings weighed in our guide on what to do with a finished puzzle.
When You Need Glue and When You Do Not
Glue is a permanence decision, not a quality decision. The right choice depends on how long the recipient wants to display the finished puzzle and whether they want to re-solve it later.
- Consider glue when you want to keep the puzzle assembled. Choose an adhesive suitable for the puzzle surface and follow its instructions. Glue does not replace the backing or mounting required by your display method.
- Support the puzzle when moving it. Glue is optional, not a requirement for relocation. Keep an unglued puzzle flat on a rigid board; do not lift it by the pieces alone.
- Skip glue for supported tabletop display. Keep the assembled puzzle flat on a stable surface, away from moisture and disturbance. This leaves the pieces available to take apart later.
- Skip glue when you want to re-solve. For upright display, choose a frame designed to secure an unglued puzzle of the correct size and thickness. A backing board alone does not hold loose pieces in place.
How to Glue a Puzzle Properly
Puzzle-saver glue is a thin liquid that bonds the pieces together while keeping the surface flat. The standard workflow:
- Solve on a flat surface. The puzzle must be assembled fully and lie flat with no warp before you start. Any gap or curl in the assembly will be locked in by the glue.
- Apply glue from a bottle with a sponge applicator. Use the applicator and application method specified for your chosen puzzle adhesive; check that it is suitable for your puzzle surface.
- Let it dry on a flat surface. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's drying and curing instructions. Keep the puzzle horizontal during the entire drying period. Do not stack anything on top.
- Mount on a rigid backing. After drying, mount the puzzle on a foam-core or rigid board cut to the same dimensions, then place it in a frame. The backing helps prevent long-term warping under the frame's weight.
For glue alternatives (peel-and-stick puzzle backing sheets, frameless mounting tape options), most craft stores carry both products under the puzzle-glue or puzzle-saver category.
